The Shutter

in Being

or “is that a 301 Redirect in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?”.

Time has come to shutter d8c.org and take my toys elsewhere. It’s been a fun time, here, and I am sure I’ll miss it to some extent, but d8c was, and is, my companion through six years of technology, dot.com, and game development. That “me”, though I miss it, too, some days, is not more. It’d be disingenuous to claim knowledge about things I have, in the past, claimed to possess expertise on, especially in this rather quickly moving world of ours.

To my visitors, especially those still looking for long-gone content on WoW and Warhammer, my apologies. WoW has, like it or not, believe it or not, wildly fanboy me or not, hit its apex a while ago and is on the, sad but inevitable in this industry, decline. Blizzard knows this, having moved its star programmers and developers into the unannounced “next” MMO. Warhammer, though hailed as the WoW competitor for some time, fails to grab the masses. From realm balances to a game concept that makes it more or less unimportant to make the game “home”, its subscriber numbers have dwindled from over half a million to somewhere around 100,000. Both are still great games, but I don’t really think I want to sink more time and/or effort into them.

To those coming for cooking and kitchen gossip, those who want their goodies and watch me make a food fool out of myself, head on over to chez Geek, my new digs.

After publishing this, I will close comments on all posts, put up a banner, and turn d8c.org into a static site. Thanks for coming over and chilling with me, here, it’s been a blast. Hope to see you at chez Geek some day, door’s open and we serve individuals and groups without reservation, 24/7, every day of the year.

best :)

jonas

There’s no Jonas-y goodness today since I’ve spent all day playing the arcade and perusing Santa Cruz’ tourist attractions with old friends and fellow Bavarians Martin (left) and Dominik (right).

Sous Sans, Quotes Edition: Knifes

June 6, 2009

Since I have gotten not one but three requests to comment on the “best cooking knife”, yet still reel from a bad case of writer’s block, I figure I’ll just do what Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me does when they don’t have time to make a show - I’ll slap together a quotes and tidbits [...]

Sending you off to the Blender…

June 5, 2009

Go spend some time tonight at the Daily Blender, an interesting accumulation of Chef Celebrity writings and general food related topics (on a side-note: I am looking for weblogs maintained by real dyed-in-the-wool chefs and cooks, industry professionals, not home-cooks or foodies. Aside from a handful [and by weblog, I mean it's more than a [...]

… in which we redecorate

June 5, 2009

I’ve spent the morning redoing some of the parts of this here website, which is as good an excuse as any for all the broken stuff that’ll indubitably creep up. Among other things, I am now making use of the @font-face directive in CSS3, which means that, if you’re not seeing fancy fonts in some [...]

Ask The Sous #1: Eggstacy and Eggscellence

June 3, 2009

Hey, you didn’t really think I’d pass up the chance at a bad, bad, pun, didn’t you? It’s all about eggs in this one, poached and over-easy to be precise. Aaah, the humble yet noble egg. A veritable source of all things delicious, a true allrounder, and one of the really hard things to master. [...]

The Perpetual Sous cooks for you!

June 2, 2009

I am a perpetual Sous. Any attempts at rising above the title and job have been, well let’s say, disastrous. It’s not so much that I don’t get the job done, I generally do, it’s that being Chef bores me. “Good excuse,” you’ll think now, and you’re right to an extent. I don’t like planning [...]

Thou art what thou cooketh to.

May 29, 2009

When entering a new kitchen, we tend to evaluate a lot of things while contemplating our employment there. There’s cleanliness (for me, at least) that’s a big one. How full is the walk-in, and are things covered and labeled? Nothing worse than hitting the weeds on a Friday because someone let last night’s sauces go [...]
